Five card stud poker strategies
Poker is the name given to a class of games using cards. Poker games differ in various aspects, like, the way of dealing the cards, the way hands are formed, which hand wins the pot when a showdown happens, limits on bets and the number of betting rounds allowed.
There are many variations of Poker. They mostly follow a play pattern that is quite similar. In most cases the hand ranking hierarchy used is the same as well. Poker games can be differentiated into three major families. This classification is performed on the basis of the betting and card dealing protocol.
In stud poker, the card dealing is performed in a combination that is pre-arranged. It follows rounds of face-up and face-down or “streets”. Betting rounds follow them. The most common of these are the Seven-card Stud and the Five-card Stud. Five-card Stud is the earliest form of stud poker which originated during the 1860s. Although its popularity has declined today, it is still popular in some parts of the world including Finland.
In five-card stud poker, the game begins with each player being dealt one face-down card followed by a face-up card. If played without a bring-in, the first betting round begins with the player with the highest ranking face-up card. If two players have the equally ranked high face-up cards, the player first in clockwise rotation from the dealer acts first. If there is a bring-in, the player with the lowest ranking up card pays the bring-in, after which betting proceeds. If two players have equally ranked low face-up cards, suit rankings are used to break the tie.
After the first betting round is complete, there is another dealing of one face-up card each to each player. Betting is started by the player whose face-up cards make the best poker hand. The second betting round is followed by another face-up card each to each player and a third round of betting, followed by a fourth similar exercise. Sometimes a showdown becomes necessary, but often five-card stud games end when someone places a bet and receives no calls.
